PhD admissions are a serious issue for many students. Either they never get a response from supervisors or if they are accepted, they never get financial aid to survive. Italy has always been a first choice for students. PhD in Italy offers the simplest process of selection and high salary for its PhD students. 

University of Turin has recently announced its PhD admission for students from all over the world. It gives you the option to enroll yourself and get paid about 1386 euro per month as the salary of a PhD student. 

Let’s break the process into different steps. 

Deadline

We will start with different intakes. This 40th PhD call of University of Turin is divided into three main sessions. 

You can apply for University of Milan

 First Session

  • First session will start accepting applications from 15 February 2024. 
  • Deadline is 15th March 2024 (2:00 PM CET time)
  • Selected students will start their classes from 1st November 2024.

 Second Session

  • Second session starts from 3rd June 2024. 
  • Deadline is 28th June 2024 (2:00 PM CET time)
  • Selected students will start their classes from 1st November 2024.

 Third Session

  • Third session starts from 18th November 2024. 
  • Deadline is 6th December 2024 (2:00 PM CET time)
  • Selected students will start their classes from 1st March 2024.

PhD Position Types

In most Italian universities, their PhD positions are divided mainly into two groups. 

Ordinary Position:

In this position, you have an option to choose your own research topic. It can also offer the options to work with the supervisor on ongoing projects. This position is fully funded for the applicants. 

Reserved Position:

Reserved positions are offered to those who are getting funded from government or local bodies. These are also reserved for research fellows. These can be offered to refugees under university rules. 

Total PhD Positions

University of Turin is offering a total of 96 PhD positions in different departments. These positions are distributed among different sessions which I explained above. These will be offered in first, second and third sessions. 

In case, university decides to increase their positions, it will be notified on the university website as well. University will update information about PhD positions every week on Tuesday and Friday. You are advised to check, if something has been updated regarding your program of interest. 

PhD Departments

As we discussed two types of positions. Either your own research topic or pre-planned research topic. I will share the details of both separately. It is also important to note that, I will be mentioning only those positions which are fully funded. 

Position with Your Own Research Topic

This means, you will be discussing possible research options with supervisor and coordinator. If you compete and satisfy supervisor, topic will be finalized and scholarships will be awarded.

Scholarships

PhD scholarship lasts for 1 year with the option of renewing it. Once you complete the course work or required research each year, university research board will analyze the report and extend your scholarship for the next year.

Usually PhD in Italy, lasts for 3-4 years depending on type of research and program. The amount of gross stipend for the year 2024/25 for a PhD students is 18854.52 euros per annum. It is 1386 euros per month.

CGPA Requirements

English Language Certificate

University of Turin, accept different English Language tests. These are as follow.

IELTS – 5.5

TOEFEL – 72

Pearson – 59

These both documents must be presented by all the applicants during your application process. In case you don’t have above documents, your application will be considered for admission under “condition”

  • For first session, you must provide before 30th April 2024.
  • For second session applicants, deadline for these documents is 31st October 2024.
  • For third session, must provide before 31st January 2025.

Mandatory Documents

  • Valid ID Document
  • Degree and transcript (Bachelor, Master).
  • English proficiency certificate
  • Abstract of Master thesis – (Any template- 3000-6000 Characters), include objectives, methodologies, results and your contributions.
  • Statement of Purpose – (max. 8000 characters, focus on scientific interest..)
  • Recommendation Letters from your professors
  • Email and contact info of two referees( Professors)
  • GRE – Validity 5 years . University code is 6994
  • Publications – if any
  • Other documents- like awards etc.

Application Fee

There is an application fee of 30 euros per application. If you are applying for more than 1 program at university of Turin, you have to pay separately.

Results Announcement

Results will be published on official website of University of Turin. No one will receive email individually. You must have to check day by day. After the deadline, admission committee will announce the result date. It will be published here.

Assessment Criteria

Every department has separate admission committee appointed by Rector of the University. They have maximum of 100 points for all the applicants. These points are divided in following ways.

  • Statement of Purpose and Recommendation Letter- 20 Points
  • Interview- 40 Points

You must get 40 points from qualification and SOP to be eligible for PhD.

For Interview, date will be published 5 days before the interview date here.

Final Ranking

Final ranking will be published on the same website. Applicants with more than 60/100 marks will be in the list. If someone will not accept the offer, next applicant will be consider for the position.

Accepting Offer

If you are in the final list and want to accept, you must have to pay a fee of 161 euros. The deadline for this payment is:

First session- 24 May 2024.

Second and third session students will be automatically considered.

Enrollment at University of Turin

After final admission, you have to enroll yourself online and strictly follow the deadline.

  1. Online Enrollment- August 10- August 11, 2024
  2. Online/ in person identification- October 18, – November 14, 2024.
